For many people it is a mystery how Junk Mailers, or Spammers as they are called,
manage to get an email to you even though your email address does not apppear anywhere
in the email "TO" or "FROM" or even "CC" header.

One technique Junk Mailers use is called "Relay Dumping". When you send an email to
someone it leaves your email program and goes to your ISP's (Internet Service Providers)
server. Your ISP has a relay process that copies your email, temporarily, while they
relay it to another or several other servers, until it finally reaches it's intended
destination. Then the ISP will delete your email from their server after they receive
confirmation that it arrived at its destination.

For example; Let's say you're in California and you want to send an email to someone
in New York. Your email message may get copied and sent to several different computers
located in several different states before it actually gets to the intended New York
destination. It does not usually go from your ISP to the intended receivers ISP
directly. That is why it is called a "relay".

This relay process is where the Junk Mailers/Spammers get into the mail system. They
have a software program that can make your ISP's server think that the Junk Mailers
computer is a valid relay server. Once this happens the Junk Mailers program can now
"Dump their junk mail into the relay process". The Junk Mailer in essence fools your
ISP's server into thinking that it is a valid relay point. It would then allow this
"Fake Relay Point" to let the email in. Thus the term "Relay Dumping". They also use
fake return addresses in an attempt to hide their tracks. This is only one of many
tricks that junk mailers use.

While ISP's are able to stop some of this from happening, it is not possible to stop it
all the way. So you continue to get junk mail. Now the reason you might not see your
email address in the "TO" header of an email, which is truly junk mail, is becuase the
Junk Mailer dumps all the email addresses into the "BCC" (Blind Carbon Copy) of the
email header. This header hides all the email addresses from the recipients of the email.
So it seems as though this email was sent to you by mistake when in fact it was not.

There is another situation where you might get an email that does not have your email
address in the "TO" header. If you are on a freinds mailing list and they send out an
email to their entire list, they will usually put the addresses in the "BCC"
(Blind Carbon Copy) header. If they do not do this, and use the "CC" (Carbon Copy)
header they will be broadcasting all of their addresses to everyone else. So whenever
someone sends a bulk email, it is common for them to put all the addresses into the
"BCC" header.

That is why Mailbox FilterTM allows you to accept email from someone who puts your email
address in their "BCC" (Blind Carbon Copy) header. When you put someone in your
"Authorized Address List" you can select "ALLOW BCC" and this allows them to send you
a bulk email with your address in the "BCC" header. If you do not want to get bulk
mailings from someone in your "Authorized Adress List" then do not check the allow
"BCC" option in the "Authorized Address List" screen. This way you can authorize them
to send you an email personally but not when they send a bulk email.

So now you know one of the major tricks that junk mailers use. With this in mind you may
now see why Mailbox FilterTM is so powerful. You see, there is one piece of the puzzle that
every ISP does not have. That is access to every one of their subscribers personal email
address book. In other words they are not capable of authorizing people into the email
system. If they tried to limit acces without having your email addresses to verify the
sender you might not get email that you wanted. And not many people are willing to give
out their email address book to their ISP!
